buy a used car for cash would be the best idea. however if you really want a car loan buy a used car that you could pay off in cash from a new car dealer with a loan then make six monthly payments a nd pay off the balance. this will raise your score. and not leave you in debt for years. in the mean time begin settling with your old creditors for a reduced payoff if they will remove the item from your credit report.this will quickly repair your credit.
What type of car are you looking to purchase? Some lenders, like Ford Motor Credit and GMAC, will approve your loan based on your tier level, which includes credit score, job time, residency, debt-to-income, and loan-to-value. If you have a solid co-signer, go to the place with the LEAST amount of fees and interest. Lending tree has a bunch of lenders that compete for your business. If you have a good co-signer you don't need to look for a bad credit car loan. You could even try the bank you or your co signer use.
You CAN get a decent car loan, even with bad or no credit. I've done it, but you'll have to look around. Shop around with lenders who specialize in bad credit car loans.
